vaira | stranger
[graduate collection]

The collection was inspired by the 'dukduks' and 'tumbuans' which are a part of the 'taraiu' from the Tolai culture, a traditional secret men's society in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. The collection entitled 'Vaira', translates to 'stranger' in Kuanua and is dramatic yet playful with a slightly sombre undertone that incorporates movement, volume and texture.

Fabric detailing within the collection required hours of stitching layers of silk chiffon and hand cutting resulting in geometric patterns inspired by organic forms and iconography evident in the Tolai culture of Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. The fabric detailing elevates the collection with its soft texture and compliments the silhouette with the clean geometric lines.

The collection was shown at Stella Runway 2016 in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea; images can be found here.
